The Joe and Rika Mansueto Library

This Month's Work - September 2008

Construction plans for the northeast corner of 57th Street and Ellis Avenue, the future site of the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library, are provided below. We apologize to patrons of the Joseph Regenstein Library and residents and users of neighboring buildings for the noise and inconveniences that will sometimes be an unavoidable result of the construction process.

Please check this page for the latest information about ongoing construction work.

September 1-30

Hours: Typically Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Project: Chilled water pipes that run through the future site of the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library are being enlarged and relocated.  The pipes are being moved to run around the future Library site.  In addition, the site is being cleared for construction, including the removal of trees and move in of equipment.

Sidewalks and paths: The Ellis Avenue sidewalk from the Henry Moore monument "Nuclear Energy" to 57th Street is closed until the completion of the Mansueto Library in 2010. An area between the Henry Moore monument to the north, the Ellis Avenue sidewalk to the west, the 57th Street sidewalk to the south, and the west side of Regenstein to the east is fenced off. This affects walking paths immediately west of Regenstein.

Roads: Ellis Avenue will be open to traffic throughout the construction period.

Anticipated noise level: Low

Technology and Electronic Services Library staff in Regenstein, as well as patrons and staff in the Preservation Department and the Special Collections Research Center can expect to hear low level noise in their work areas.  Construction noise is not expected to reach other areas within Regenstein.

Tennis court: The tennis court at 57th and Ellis is no longer available.  The court is being dismantled.
